The goal of general surgery is to treat problems with the gastrointestinal tract, including the oesophagus, stomach, small and large intestines, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix, bile ducts, and frequently the thyroid gland. Despite its name, general surgery is a surgical speciality. General surgeons are in charge of patient care before, during, and after surgery in addition to doing procedures for a variety of common illnesses. All surgeons must complete general surgery training before moving on to specialise in another field. General surgeons practise a variety of surgical operations, and because of the broad scope of their education, they are able to carry out a variety of procedures as part of their duties. 5 While some may decide to pursue a speciality, others prefer the diversity that a real general surgeon's day offers and perform a wide range of treatments.
